"Sixteen Down" is a darker, sad song by alt-country legends The Jayhawks. This track, off of their 1997 American Recordings release "Sound of Lies," guest features Matthew Sweet on backup vocals. It's a tragic song about a girl named Madeline who got knocked overboard while out at sea. They dragged the stream, her body never to be found.

Now the blue has turned to red
All but given up for dead
ohh, Madeline--Madeline breathe
