For fans of nerdy pop music, young and old, They Might Be Giants are absolute favorites. On the album "John Henry," TMBG experimented with a fuller, band-backed sound. Today's featured track, "Sleeping in the Flowers," features a guitar solo from Robert Quine.

Roger Joseph Manning, Jr., or Roger Manning as his friends call him, is an accomplished keyboardist, songwriter, singer, producer, and overall power pop musician. Along with Jason Falkner, he was a member of the Jellyfish, and thereafter went on to be in bands such as Imperial Drag, Air, and TV Eyes.
Today's featured album, "Catnip Dynamite," was released in Japan on Pony Canyon Music. Sadly, unlike his previous Japanese release "Solid State Warrior," which was released in the US as "The Land of Pure Imagination," this new release has not yet made it directly to America.

The Explorers Club is a band from South Carolina, who made a big splash at South by Southwest in 2007 and were promptly signed to Dead Oceans. As KZSU DJ Sadie O has said in her review of "Freedom Wind",
"It doesn’t sound so much derivative to me as much as it sounds like someone discovered the lost acetate of the next record the Beach Boys were gonna put out... I’m not complaining!"
On tonight's episode of the Palo Alto Pop Overthrow, we aired an exclusive interview with Jason Brewer of The Explorers Club. We talked about... ...the wonders of South Carolina ...what it was like co-writing songs on Freedom Wind ...the genesis of Explorers Club as a band ...and lots more! Take a listen:
Favorite tracks: 2. Honey, I Don't Know Why, 1. Forever, 5. Do You Love Me?, 10. Hold Me Tight, 11. Last Kiss
Label: Dead Oceans RIYL: The Beach Boys Five stars. The album is simply addictive and so easy to listen to. When it comes time to draw the line, this will easily make my best of 2008 list.

This track is from Starbelly's second release on Not Lame, entitled "Everyday and then Some." It was completed after Cliff Hillis left the band, and is produced by Andy Bopp (of Myracle Brah.)
Yes folks, the moment you've been waiting for (since 2004) is finally here: Matthew Sweet has released a new album, today's featured album, entitled "Sunshine Lies." Matthew is one of our all-time favorite musicians here on the Palo Alto Pop Overthrow. As we've mentioned in numerous posts, Matthew is the man credited with leading the American Power Pop revival of the 90s. After four years, we're finally treated to another outing with Mr. Sweet, who is joined by the throwback cast of musicians from the "Girlfriend" era, including Ivan Julian, Richard Lloyd, and Greg Leisz. As usual, Ric Menck (of the Velvet Crush), pounds the skins on "Sunshine Lies."
The album falls flat on a few fronts - let's just say it's no "100% Fun." Like the mediocre release "Living Things" from 2004, Matthew seems to put a lot of anger into his increasingly more rock-n-roll and less power pop music. There's more overdrive and less harmony on this disc, which lends me to believe that Matthew is abandoning the ways of albums like "Blue Sky on Mars" or "Kimi Ga Suki" and venturing off into more "Altered Beast" and "Girlfriend" territory.
Favorite tracks: 1. Time Machine, 3. Byrdgirl, 13. Back of my Mind
Here's a little power pop gem to brighten up your work week. Given that we've previously featured both The Greenberry Woods' album "Rapple Dapple" and the track "Forever" from Splitsville, here's a little gift of manna... From their album "Repeater", this is the track "Manna (Say You Believe):"
As promised, here is the full interview I conducted with Jason Falkner and aired this week on the Palo Alto Pop Overthrow. Exclusively for this blog, there are a few extra segments included that weren't aired on the radio. Thanks again to Jason for the chat.
As mentioned in the interview, here's a look at what's in Jason's CD player these days:
Tonight on the Palo Alto Pop Overthrow, we're featuring Jason Falkner's two most recent albums: "I'm OK... You're OK" and "Bedtime with the Beatles 2." Jason was kind enough to talk with your host, Phil Andrews, a few weeks back. Tune in to hear about all sorts of things, like:
Why I'm OK, You're OK took so long to come out (and when it's coming to the US!)
