Ben Folds is back with yet another album of bright, infectious and mildly immature (thus fun) piano pop. Ben Folds (Five) standard components include: fuzzed out guitar and/or bass, silly piano flourishes, and "almost witty but more like sixth grader witty" lyrics. As usual the music he writes and performs falls into one of three buckets: blast off piano pop verging on piano punk, songs about relationships, situations, and/or women gone nuts, or sad and somber tunes designed to channel emotion more through the piano than through the vocals alone. In that regard Ben has not changed one iota... but he does it so well!
Favorite tracks: 9. Bitch Went Nuts, 4. You Don't Know Me (see the video), 10. Brainwascht, 3. The Frown Song, 11. Effington

Well, another fine year of power pop has flown by. 2008 is on its way out, but fear not - we're going to take this week's show to go back in time over the past quarter and review all of the fantastic music we've featured on the Palo Alto Pop Overthrow. Look out - there will also be some Christmas music slipped in here and there too. It's all tomorrow on the Palo Alto Pop Overthrow, 7AM-9AM on the west coast, 10AM-Noon on the east coast. Tune in live at http://kzsulive.stanford.edu - we'll also have some new tracks from Bleu and from The Corner Laughers - you won't want to miss it.
Happy Holiday Hooks and Holiday Harmonies, -Phil Andrews

The Jellybricks are comprised of Larry Kennedy (guitar, vocals), Garrick Chow (bass guitar, vocals), Bryce Connor (guitar, vocals), and Tom Kristich (drums, vocals.) They bring a really cool, fun sound to the table. It's in your face--not punk, mind you--but multiharmonious, very busy and upbeat. Having started in 1997 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, "Goodnight to Everyone" is the Jellybrick's fourth record on Primitive Records. In addition to their prolific output, they have toured with everyone from the Fountains of Wayne to the Barenaked Ladies.

This past week I had a great chat with Steve Eggers, of The Nines. They're a great power pop band in the unbelievable combination of styles of XTC and Queen, based out of Toronto, Canada. The featured album for Tuesday, December 9th is their latest release, "Gran Jukle's Field." The album was partially recorded and produced by our buddy Bleu McAuley.
Take a listen to the interview, in which we talk about:
Just what is Jukle's Field anyway?
Working with Bleu on this latest album, and the song "Dance Just for Me"
Upcoming releases and projects for Steve/The Nines
Favorite tracks: 1. Insanity (The Sanest Thing You've Got), 7. Virginia, 3. Dance Just for Me, 12. Gran Jukle's Field
