Palo Alto Pop Overthrow with Phil Andrews Thursdays from 7-9AM PST/10-Noon EST KZSU Stanford, 90.1FM / http://kzsulive.stanford.edu/ Blog at http://www.palopop.org/
If you've been enjoying all of this catchy power pop and indie pop we've been playing on the Palo Alto Pop Overthrow, then you should come out this Friday night to the House of Shields in San Francisco, to see the monthly indie pop dance night known to those in the know as Your Latest Crush. Your host, Phil Andrews, will be spinning two sets over the course of the night, alongside regulars Debbie and Aaron. During Phil's set you'll get to hear tunes from Belle and Sebastian, Darren Hanlon, The New Pornographers, and other dashingly good tunes from indie pop bands. Other bands you might know and definitely will enjoy include: The Lucksmiths, Le Tigre, The Smiths, and Los Campesinos!
It's this Friday at the House of Shields, 39 New Montgomery Street, which is 1/2 block from the Montgomery BART/MUNI stop. It's from 9pm-2am, with a $4 cover.
This album by Wondermints was recorded in 1998, 7 years after the group first started playing power pop together in Los Angeles. They developed quite a following and Brian Wilson of Beach Boys fame soon caught on and enlisted them to join his touring band. Wilson has said "If I'd had Wondermints in 1967, I'd have taken 'Smile' [Wilson's genius record that remained private for many years] out on the road." Quite a ringing endorsement! Their '60s lounge music style and inclination towards kooky lyrics also landed them a spot on the oh so groovy Austin Powers Soundtrack.

Before we get underway, this is Zan and Blanch here and we will be Phil's "minions" for the next few weeks on KZSU 90.1. Assume any gaffes are our responsibility and be sure to tune in on Thursday mornings from 7-9AM!
Now, onto Pas/Cal! This Detroit-based band spent nearly all of 2007 in the studio putting together this album with a "smart," and "subversive" sound. Phil describes the album as musical ADHD; it's packed full of twists and turns of melody and harmony without a chorus in sight. This album in one listen: "O Honey We're Ridiculous"

Cliff Hillis, whose collaborations we've covered extensively on the Palo Alto Pop Overthrow, is back with another fine solo album. These days he's based out of the outskirts of Philly. For this, his third album, he had a chance to work with Danny Wilde of The Rembrandts.
Favorite tracks: 4. Northern Lights, 1. She Sees, 3. Elevator, 9. All for the Sake, 10. Shake me down
