Hey everyone, before I start I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm Nick and some of you may have heard me on the air over the past two weeks. I'm another in the long line of adoring fans/trainees to appear on Phil's show and I hope you'll bear with me as I learn to properly construct sentences while on-air! Now, without further ado....
Our featured artist for the week is Travis with their newest CD Ode to J. Smith. They started in Scotland under the name "Running Red" but eventually evolved into Travis with the addition of front-man Fran Healy. They have been produced by many influential producers including Steve Lillywhite, Nigel Godrich and Geoff Emerick. Their soft sound and introspective lyrics make for a smooth, cool listenable CD that's definitely worth a listen.
The band currently consists of Fran Healy, Dougie Payne, Andy Dunlop and Neil Primrose. Take a look below for a video of them playing their single Something Anything:
Favorite tracks: 3. Something Anything, 6. Last Words, 10. Song to Self
Blanch and Zan, (us) the once nervous, um-ing and ah-ing, minions have been promoted. This is a special day in our hearts. For the past few weeks we have been hauling our lazy bums out of bed at 6 in the morning to learn all the radio DJ tricks. But now our training wheels are off and he's released us onto the air by ourselves. Whether that was a sensible idea is yet to be seen or rather, heard. But we are ridiculously excited about it.
We are so grateful for all the patient, enthusiastic help from Phil. How someone manages to be so cheery at that time of the morning I do not know! It must have something to do with the great soundtrack. The Palo Alto Pop Overthrow is infectious, now I get up just to listen to the show!!!
thanks Phil!!!
P.S. our fave tracks from the last few weeks on the show: Pas/Cal - Summer is Almost Here Mercury Rev - Snowflake In a Hot World Wondermints - Cellophane The Nines - Insanity Ben Folds ft Regina Spektor - You Don't Know Me

Well, it's Tuesday, and for those of you who aren't already back to work on the account of President's day, it's time to start the work week. But don't fret - here's a tasty power pop gem for you to enjoy. Slink back into your cubicle, pop on your headphones, and turn this sucker up: it's the music video for "Can't Be Wrong," by the band the Jellybricks, whose recent album Goodnight to Everyone was featured on this very blog back in December. This video was directed by their bass player Garrick:
My buddy Lee over at the most excellent Too Poppy blog has some great news: Brandon Schott is putting up a series of exclusive audio/video recordings for their site. Here's a look at the video for the first of what promises to be a monthly delight:
During the interview we featured tracks from their recent EP called "What We Are." The EP is phenomenal, and I wish the band the best. Favorite tracks: 1. In Your Eyes, 3. Six Feet Small, 4. What Went Wrong
This week's featured album is "Black Magic Marker" by a band based out of LA. Their deceptive name--Light FM--is absolutely unlike their sound, which is pop recalling the 60s/70s like The Cars, merged with some twee elements and of course power pop like The Rentals and Redd Kross. The band currently consists of Josiah Mazzaschi on guitar and vocals, Kim Haden on keys and vocals, and Brian Barbier on bass. Check out the Moog action on the title track for the disc, "Black Magic Marker:"

This week on the Palo Alto Pop Overthrow, we interviewed Roger Joseph Manning, Jr. We talked about his album Catnip Dynamite, which we featured last year after it came out in Japan. This week marks its release in the US, which you can get at Not Lame or Amazon.
We chatted about:
...how Roger brought this album to the USA.
...a few songs off of Catnip Dynamite and what they're all about.
...which song of Roger's was practiced but never performed by the Jellyfish, but ended up on the album "Land of Pure Imagination."
...a potential collaboration with one of our favorite bands, Pugwash.
...what music Roger is really grooving to these days.
